I look for: unconscious bias, stereotypes, potential microaggressions, and acceptable terminology. I can help improve the representation and quality of your work when it is *about* Indigenous peoples.

Hello! I am so excited to be getting started with Hello! I am so excited to be getting started with Edified Projects and wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. I’m Becca Shortt, a white settler born and raised on Treaty 6, just outside of Amiskwaciy Waskahikan (Beaver Hills House – Edmonton, A.B.). I am forever grateful for the people I built relationships with there, they are the reason I am able to do this work. Currently I live on the unceded territory of the Lekwungen speaking peoples, known today as the Songhees and Esquimalt nations (Victoria, B.C.). Reciprocity, relationality, and gratitude drive the focus of my work in Indigenous engagement and allyship.

I have an MA in Community Engagement with a focus on Indigneous/non-Indigenous ethical relationships and collaboration as well as 5 years experience working with Indigenous communities throughout Treaty 6 and Treaty 8, specifically with the Métis settlements. I am passionate about working with diverse groups of people who bring their own worldviews, experiences, stories, and knowledge into a collaborative learning space. I believe every individual has gifts they bring that help build a stronger collective.

When I’m not working, you can definitely find me walking my dog Bella - a true goofball monster, or cross stitching while binge watching tv.

Thanks for taking the time to get to know me, hope to meet you in our workshops!
"When you learn about this past in a reflexive way "When you learn about this past in a reflexive way, you will hopefully feel more comfortable exploring your actions, roles and responsibilities, and connectedness to others in future."

On Orange Shirt Day we honour residential school survivors and their families. It is a day to learn about and reflect on the past so we can move forward in a better way. To learn more, read Alicia’s article “Orange Shirt Day 2020” (link in bio). It not only details the meaning and importance of the day, it is also an invitation for people to learn more and participate in Orange Shirt Day on September 30th.

Relation to lands, our communities, and our work t Relation to lands, our communities, and our work to decolonize. These are the main themes that can form the foundation of a personal and authentic land acknowledgment.

We hope that in sharing this you are able to take a couple simple steps to move from a script to an authentic acknowledgment.

@chewbecca.s and I can deliver a full-day in-person land acknowledgment workshop. We are working on what this could look like virtually and we are always thinking about how to involve others in this work.

Hello / Taanishii / Tansi! I’ve made some change Hello / Taanishii / Tansi! I’ve made some changes to my website, edifiedprojects.com (link in my bio to the main page and Indigenous History Month 30 day challenge). It is now more aligned with the kind of work I value and the kinds of organizations and individuals I’d like to collaborate with. I spent some time thinking about the values I want to continue infusing in my work and the people I’d like to serve, and I (hope I've) centered this on every page.

I thought it was a great time to reintroduce myself to new followers. I’m Alicia Hibbert, a Metis person with ties to Manitoba (Naults and Champagnes from Richer and Ste. Anne on my mom's side, British and French on my dad's side) and Alberta (where I was raised and lived until 2019), currently living in Musqueam, Tsleil Waututh, and Squamish territory on the west coast. I get a lot of joy from working collaboratively, with a sense of hopefulness and forward-thinking, and I love making the plans, seeing the patterns, and figuring out how to achieve maximum impact with minimal resources. I value applying these gifts for societal change and community wellbeing, and I try to do that in all work I do.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me!

Do you have any reflections on your engagement to share with others?
#blackouttuesday We will pause the 30 day challen #blackouttuesday
We will pause the 30 day challenge in solidarity today. Please consider the purpose of this action - to mute white noise and amplify black voices. The purpose is not to post a black square and stop there.
June is National Indigenous History Month. As a Me June is National Indigenous History Month. As a Metis person who worked with Metis and First Nations communities for years, it's really important to me to spread awareness of the contemporary (current) resilience in Indigenous communities. This month I will be partnering with my ally @chewbecca.s to deliver a 30-day challenge for you to engage with Indigenous leaders, knowledge, and practices.

It can't go unsaid, however, that we are doing this during an extremely difficult time for the BIPOC/IBPOC community, specifically for our Black and Black-Indigenous kin. Our hope is that, by inspiring allies to engage with Indigenous excellence, we are spreading love, compassion, and anti-racist intention.

testimonials

As an international student, to be honest, I find it quite hard to follow the writing and thinking patterns in English, especially doing such a big project in the area of education. Your help means way more than editing, because you are my writing guru! You’ve helped me to make my project “shine.” – Xiaonuo (Nicole) Li

After having to look at my thesis for two years straight there were multiple issues that needed correcting, as well as some errors that I simply did not see/was not aware of. Alicia caught these errors and helped correct the citation in my thesis so that it was concise and up to proper standards. I am happy to say that my thesis was approved for graduation without any citation or formatting errors! – Amabel D’Souza
